White Stripes fans will dig Band of Skulls’ swampy, heavily blues-influenced jams, especially the psychedelic stomp of “Light of the Morning” and the hard-charging “I Know What I Am.” But these guys aren’t just blues-rock formalists: they occasionally veer into complex prog-rock territory on tracks like the sprawling, appropriately-titled “Impossible.”

..:|:Lisa Shaw:|:..

Her warm, sexy vocals have graced many a house music track since 1995, but Lisa Shaw's name is still fairly obscure. She's a "house diva" -- owner of an anonymous voice that soars above crowded dancefloors at 3 a.m., enchanting listeners, only to disappear a few minutes later. Anyone who's ever gone clubbing has probably heard her -- possibly more than once. Shaw is nearly ubiquitous in the house music scene. She's collaborated with many famous producers, and has appeared on countless compilations.

..:|:The Stanley Clarke Trio:|:..

"How do you make one jazz trio different from so many others? Have the diverse stylings of Stanley Clarke on bass, the experience of Lenny White on drums and the adventurous spirit of Hiromi on piano. The result is the Stanley Clarke Trio."
~Woodrow Wilkins

As a teenager I was inspired to take bass guitar lessons after listening to Stanley Clarke play the bass, often accompanied by Lenny White on the drums  [during their days together in "Return To Forever"]. About three years ago I came across Hiromi Uehara, she quickly became one of my favorite pianist. If you asked me who would be a part of my "dream team trio"... here it is, very real and and a musical gift for the jazz world and it's lovers!

..:|:J*DaVeY:|:..

What do you get when you mix a bold, modelesque, mohawked chick with a boys name and an electro-funk-soul, uber-hip robotica boy with a name fit for a girl? What happens when you blend 1-part Electronica, 2-parts Soul, and a sprinkle of Funk and Hip-Hop? What do you think evolves when you take a little bit of yesterday, a little more of today, and a whole bunch of tomorrow and throw it in a boiling pot of magic musical fusion? Well, by definition, you have whipped up a hot, undeniable batch of J*DaVeY, a duo with a sound that screams of past, present, and future influences. Their progressive Soul melodies are infused with New Wave electronic impulses that mesh so beautifully it is almost impossible to put a label on it. Thus, the connection between the mysteriously androgynous name and the new sound becomes simple and plain: J*DaVeY is new food for the malnourished musical soul.

..:|:SMV:|:..

In an era where sports fantasy leagues are all the rage comes a real-life historic teaming that serious music fans and bass players have long dreamed of. SMV unites music titans Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten. This unique alliance of three generations of bass gods has been on chat room and fan gathering wish lists for over 15 years, kept alive by periodic statements from all three that schedules permitting they would give it a go. Finally, in October 2007, with Clarke set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bass Player magazine, at its annual Bass Player Live! event in New York City, Miller and Wooten made the time to attend and induct their mentor. The ensuing VSOP jam not only blew the minds of the 900 in attendance, it cemented for the trio their inherent musical chemistry and thus the viability of pursuing the project in earnest. As a result, in January 2008, SMV entered the studio to record a CD.

“Some bands stick with the same style forever,” says singer Shingai Shoniwa, whose versatile vocals have seen her compared to everyone from Deborah Harry and Kate Bush to Billie Holiday and Diana Ross. “They get together because they share identical musical tastes, then never do anything different. We’re a gang, but we’re also three divas with different record collections who constantly introduce each other to new sounds, whether it’s African music, jazz, Van Morrison or Black Sabbath. For us, making music means keeping our ears open.”

..:|:Anoushka Shankar:|:..

Like her father before her, Anoushka Shankar is a musical eclectic experimenting with forms far beyond those of Indian classical music. Going even further than on her previous disc, Rise, Shankar, along with co-producer Karsh Kale, explores the meeting of electronica and India.

There are prodigies and there is progeny. Anoushka Shankar is both. As the daughter of sitar legend Ravi Shankar, she's got bloodlines and a teacher who is one of the greatest to ever play sitar. While Anoushka has pretty good classical chops (not the best, but pretty good), Rise shows her versatility and growth as a composer, arranger, and producer. The nine-song album features her sitar along with a variety of traditional Indian and modern Western instruments.

..:|:Bird Up:|:..

"Before Bird passed in 1955, practically every player in jazz was, in some way or another, emulating his artistry. Still to this day, jazz musicians the world over hitch ride upon ride on Bird's creative coattails like some many-headed high horse of traditionalism gone far astray from its source by way of simply staying too close to home. Charlie Parker would not like what jazz has become: a shell of its former self; not much more than an apelike imitation of its bygone glory days; a bunch of recycled aluminum cans that used to be the brightest star in the night sky. That star was Bird - the original punk rocker; the original hip hopper; the original American Idol (or mine, at least). In all the years since Bird's passing, I hadn't ever heard a fitting tribute to the man more responsible than anyone else for what went on to become not only contemporary jazz, but rock and roll, hip hop and every other important musical movement this side of the 50's... until now. Bird Up - The Charlie Parker Remix Project is precisely that fitting tribute. If you believe in the raw genius that Bird brought to the table first, or even if you're intrigued by it and want to know more, then, along with some of Bird's original masterpieces (preferably those recorded in the mid to late 40's), run out and get your hands on a copy of this record. Bird's rebellious spirit lives in it. Unlike your typical jazz musician's paltry efforts to mimic Bird's stylings, this group of young musical mavericks have constructed a provocative, youthful, deeply loving eulogy which sings Charlie Parker's praises all the way up to the high heavens - straight to the source."
