..:|:Georgia Anne Muldrow:|:..

From her brilliantly loopy 2006 opus Olesi: Fragments of an Earth to a scene- stealing cameo on Erykah Badu's New Amerykah: Part One, Muldrow has artfully merged progressive soul with Africanist spirituality. For this compilation, the multi-instrumentalist-producer gathers family and friends, including partner Dudley Perkins, mom Rickie Byars Beckwith, and indie-soul protégés Jimetta Rose and Eagle Nebulay. Muldrow directs the clan with melodically funky, oddly delightful whimsy.

UMSINDO (which means sound in Zulu) is Muldrow's second full length album and tells this story with subject matter ranging from world politics to the metaphysical sciences-with laserlike synthwork to match. Muldrow, is the producer/singer/songwriter phenomenon who keeps on giving.
Umsindo is dedicated to Muldrow's African heritage with themes of creation and calls to wake up the consciousness to all who hear it. This Afro-centric gem of an album speaks to the Zulu warriors whose lineage goes back before the planet, where the power of sound is paramount. Los Angeles-born Georgia Anne Muldrow (a.k.a. Ms.One) is well known for her unorthodox soundscaping and inspired traditional African song structuring. Her cameo performances with artists such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Dudley Perkins, Madlib and Wildchild feature her as a vocalist. Most recently Muldrow's track "Roses" is featured on Mos Def's latest release, The Ecstatic. The original "Roses" (sans Mos Def) is on Umsindo.

Rudresh Mahanthappa is a key figure in the cutting edge New York scene of composers/improvisers that also includes Vijay Iyer, Steve Lehman, and Liberty Ellman. ..:|:Miles From India:|:..

In a startlingly original recreation of music associated with jazz legend Miles Davis, producer-archivist Bob Belden, renowned for his Grammy Award-winning reissue work on a series of Miles Davis boxed sets for Sony/Columbia, along with co-arranger Louiz Banks (celebrated keyboardist from India), has recast familiar themes from such landmark recordings as Bitches Brew, In A Silent Way, and Kind of Blue with an East Meets West sensibility on Miles...From India. An incredibly ambitious project involving two dozen musicians from two separate continents recording in studios around the world, Miles...From India is a cross-cultural summit meeting that puts a provocative pan-global spin on such Miles classics as All Blues, Spanish Key, So What, It s About That Time and Jean Pierre.
Sitar and tablas, ghatam and khanjira, mridangam and Carnatic violin blend seamlessly with muted trumpet and saxophones, screaming electric guitar and grooving electric bass lines, piano, upright bass and drums on this profound fusion of Indian classical and American jazz.

..:|:Goapele:|:..

I first heard Goapele on MySpace, immediately searched for everything i could find by her. Her music is typically described as neo-soul, but I'm still not sure what that is. What I do know is that I love her voice, the purity of her lyrics, and the simplicity of her musical tracks [I'm slightly irritated by overly produced tracks]. Old or new... this is how I like my Soul/R&B music to sound!

"Goapele is a phenomenal artist in every sense of the word. She paints vivid pictures of the stories she tells, a craft that few singers can truly do since they all tend to resort to whatever catchy hook is going to get them a Top 40 hit. The socially-conscious vibe as well as the wistful antidotes shape the very essence of who Goapele is and what her music is about. Even Closer (the revamped version of her independently released Closer) was released in 2002 and helped get her name out there to the contemporary soul crowd. Now over three years later, the sultry songstress returns with her second album Change It All. Luckily, she sticks to a similar formula on this album and doesn't adjust her sound too much."

..:|:Terence Blanchard:|:..

Terence Blanchard is a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and Golden Globe-nominated film score composer. Since he emerged on the scene in 1980 with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and then shortly thereafter with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blanchard has been a leading artist in jazz. He was an integral figure in the 1980s jazz resurgence having recorded several award-winning albums and having performed with the jazz elite. He is known as a straight-ahead artist in the hard bop tradition but has recently utilized an African-fusion style of playing that makes him unique from other trumpeters on the performance circuit. However, it is as a film composer that Blanchard reaches his widest audience. His trumpet can be heard on nearly fifty film scores; more than forty bear his unmistakable compositional style.

Terence Blanchard - A Tale Of God's Will: A Requiem For Katrina [2007]

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans native son Terence Blanchard has created an impassioned song cycle, A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina), as his third album for Blue Note Records. This 13-track emotional tour-de-force of anger, rage, compassion, melancholy, and beauty features Blanchard's quintet- pianist Aaron Parks, saxophonist Brice Winston, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Kendrick Scott- as well as a 40-member string orchestra.

Terence Blanchard - Let's Get Lost [2001]

This album is a tribute to songwriter Jimmy McHugh, a pillar of Broadway and Hollywood throughout much of the first half of the 20th century. Blanchard takes extensive liberties with McHugh's songs and enlists four very well-known female vocalists to help him pull it off: Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, and Cassandra Wilson. They appear on two songs apiece — except for Krall, who leads off the album playing piano and singing only on the title track.

..:|:Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears:|:..

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears is an eight-piece, garage-soul ensemble featuring groove-laden guitars, penetrating brass and a fiery frontman who exudes power and attitude. Experiencing the raw energy of Black Joe's performances, accompanied by The Honeybears' masterful backing is the equivalent of a kick to the stomach. Their gut-shot style, felt in such songs as "Gunpowder", "Master Sold My Baby" and "I'm Broke", draws directly from their classic soul, R&B and blues influences. Inspiration from artists such as Otis Redding and The Bar-Kays, James Brown and Lightning Hopkins are clearly present in their songs and live shows, but Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears inject a full-tilt, unabashedly brash element to this old-school style. Tell `Em What Your Name Is! was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon, and recorded, mostly live in the studio, in Austin, TX.

..:|:Q-Tip:|:..

2009 release from the acclaimed rapper and former member of A Tribe Called Quest. This long-delayed album, slated originally for release in 2001, is finally dropping! A musical hybrid, Kamaal was commendably avant-garde at the time of its creation. Amazingly, it's even more appropriate in 2009; given the lack of musical merit and skilled MCs in today's Hip Hop, the time is... NOW for Tip. Kamaal the Abstract is an intensely eclectic and revealing record. Q-Tip produced the entire album himself, even playing several instruments. What comes from Kamaal is a daring masala of Soul, Nu-Jazz, head-nodding Hip Hop, and organic Pop magic in the vein of Stevie Wonder or Prince.

..:|:Imani Coppola:|:..

"While just a sophomore at the State University of New York (studying orchestra and later studio composition), Imani Coppola gained a record contract for her surrealistic, sample-laden pop vision of hip-hop, linked to Digable Planets as well as Neneh Cherry. While growing up, her entire family was musical, and Coppola began playing violin at the age of six. She began writing songs and practiced her vocals (although her recording career has featured her rapping more than singing). Her debut album, Chupacabra, featured the MTV hit "Legend of a Cowgirl." Coppola spent the next decade out of the limelight -- her label dropped her before she could release her follow-up, so she set about making music in relative obscurity in New York, starting her own label so as to release her own material, including 2004's Afrodite. In 2007, however, she was picked up by Ipecac Records, who issued The Black & White Album late that year.

A hip-hop icon, member of the Wu Tang Clan for more than 15 years, Ghostface Killah's multitude of fans have been tuning in to 'The World According to Pretty Toney' long enough to know that "he doesn't so much deliver rhymes as narrate graphically detailed scenes, rife with violence, passion and a little humor," as stated in USA Today. Ghost has made a habit of enlisting duet partners on his singles and album tracks - Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Jadakiss, Ne-Yo, and many others, including his Wu Tang Clan brothas; Raekwon, Method Man, U-God, etcetera. Ghostdini (aka Ghostface Killah) returns under a new guise in 2009 as 'THE WIZARD OF POETRY', his 6th Def Jam album [10th major label album], on which he attracts an A-list of duet partners including John Legend, Fabolous, Raheem DeVaughn, Lloyd, Estelle, and others. The new album is due to arrive in the physical and digital marketplace on September 29th.
